Acupuncture & Women’s Health

Clinical evidence has shown acupuncture to be very useful in treating a wide range of gynaecological disorders and is becoming increasingly attractive to both patients and healthcare professionals as it has proven itself to be non-invasive, gentle and safe when carried out by trained, experienced acupuncturists. At Oranmore Acupuncture Clinic, we view acupuncture as a treatment method that can be used either in isolation or in conjunction with any medical care which a patient may currently be under. It is also important to bear in mind that every individual is unique and thus every patient responds to acupuncture differently. In addition, the number of sessions required can vary depending on the nature and severity of the condition. Acupuncture can be used to help treat a wide range of gynaecological conditions including but not restricted to: Dysmennorrhoea, Amennorrhoea, Endometriosis, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and Menopausal symptoms.

Acupuncture & Fertility

Post-natal care

Acupuncture is becoming increasingly attractive to both patients and health care professionals as it has proven itself to be non-invasive, gentle and safe when carried out by trained, experienced acupuncturists. When it comes to fertility issues, studies have shown that acupuncture is capable of exerting a therapeutic effect on a number of factors affecting fertility in women including uterine blood flow and ovarian blood flow and can improve the fertility and overall health of women. Acupuncture has also been shown to benefit plasma levels of FSH and LH in women with normal ovulation as well as those suffering from ovulatory disorders. In addition, it therapeutically impacts factors which may increase the chances of embryo implantation in the uterus thus increasing the chances of a successful pregnancy.

Pre-Conception Fertility Care

Preparing for conception and pre-conception fertility care is an important concept in Traditional Chinese Medicine as it centres on helping the body to develop eggs and sperm that are as healthy as possible. It takes approximately 100 days for an egg to develop towards ovulation in a woman whilst sperm production in the man takes up to 116 days to reach completion. This 3-4 month timespan prior to a potential conception provides a window of opportunity for a couple to consciously work on their health and pre-conception fertility care. At Oranmore Acupuncture Clinic we work closely with couples who either want to conceive naturally as well as couples who are undergoing fertility treatment. Our treatments are tailored to the individual needs of each patient and include dietary and lifestyle advice where required.

Acupuncture & IVF

As an adjunct therapy to current medical fertility interventions such as IVF (In-Vitro Fertilisation) acupuncture has been shown to increase the clinical pregnancy rate and treatment around the time of embryo transfer has been proven to achieve a higher live birth rate. Its calming and anxiolytic also mean that acupuncture can provide an excellent alternative for stress reduction in women undergoing fertility treatment. The drug- free, non-invasive nature of acupuncture also means that whilst it is effective, in the hands of an experienced acupuncturist, it is also gentle and safe enough for women undergoing the various stages of fertility treatment. Adding acupuncture to fertility treatment regimens can also improve the overall health of the couple, reduce the side-effects of the medications and help to increase the chances of conception. For couples considering IVF, we recommend acupuncture treatment for ideally 4-6 weeks prior to commencing IVF treatment cycles whilst treatment plans during IVF cycles are tailored to each individual and the fertility protocols being used for their IVF treatment.
