What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine, sterile, single use needles at various acupuncture points around the body to restore balance. Gentle enough to be used on the youngest of patients, yet effective enough to help tackle a wide range of conditions, this age-old method of treatment is over 3000 years old with its popularity going from strength to strength.

How does it work?

Acupuncture works on the premise that the body contains meridians or channels that carry energy (Qi) around the body. By utilising acupuncture points around the body, balance can be restored to the system as a whole thus allowing it to function at its optimum. From a scientific viewpoint, acupuncture has been shown to increase local blood supply, stimulate and increase endorphin levels and reduce pain signalling in the brain.

At Oranmore Acupuncture Clinic, we view acupuncture as a treatment method that can be used either in isolation or in conjunction with any medical care which a patient may currently be under. It is important to bear in mind that every individual is unique and thus every patient responds to acupuncture differently. In addition, the number of sessions required can vary depending on the nature and severity of the condition. The World Health Organisation has outlined a list of conditions that it feels can be treated successfully using Acupuncture including, but not restricted to the following conditions:

Insurance Cover

As fully accredited members of the Acupuncture Foundation Professional Association, we are recognised by all the major health insurance providers in Ireland including VHI, Laya Healthcare, Aviva and the HSF. We are also recognised by other health insurance schemes that cover acupuncture such as the Garda Medical Scheme and the ESB fund. As individual health insurance policies can vary, we ask that our patients check with their insurance providers to ensure that their particular policy covers acupuncture treatment. We issue receipts to our patients at every session and recommend that you retain these receipts for your convenience.
